General equipment
To hire a backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, stove or tent, head to Equipment Hire in our shop. Here you can book and pay for hire gear. It also outlines the booking conditions and the bond which is required at the time of collection of gear.
Bookings cannot be made over the phone or without payment.
Personal Locating Beacons (PLBs)
The PLBs for hire are the KTI SA2G which operate on the 406 MHz frequency, are waterproof, compact and weigh 140 grams. Check the specifications.
You may hire these for use anywhere within Australia or New Zealand only.
If you wish to hire a Personal Locating Beacon (PLB) please head to PLB Hire in our shop. Here you can book and pay for PLBs. It also outlines the booking conditions and the bond which is required at the time of collection. We ask that bookings are preferably made five business days prior to the start of the hire period.
Note that the PLBs are required to be registered to the user. All mandatory fields on the booking form must be completed before a hire will be approved. The Foundation will register the beacon for you. Read more.
Please read the PLB Instructions for Use before you take the PLB on your outdoor adventure. We also suggest that you read the PLB User’s Manual before your walk.
Please book early! Our equipment is in high demand during the walking season (April to November). PLBs are often booked out months in advance.
Food dehydrators
These are available for up to two weeks at a time.
What is a food dehydrator?
A food dehydrator is an appliance that removes moisture from food to aid in its preservation. A food dehydrator uses heat and air flow to reduce the water content of foods. The water content of food is usually very high, typically 80% to 95% for various fruits and vegetables and 50% to 75% for various meats. Removing moisture from food restrains bacteria from growing and spoiling food. Further, removing moisture from food dramatically reduces the weight of the food. Dehydration is therefore an excellent way to prepare foods for carrying when bushwalking.
The Ezi-dri food dehydrator comes with an instruction and recipe book, five trays, one mesh sheet and four solid sheets for liquids.
